Hamilton –
I find the print quality very poor, especially for the example figures. Some of the print is so small and blurred
that I can’t even read it with a magnifying glass. Otherwise the overall general text is pretty good.
Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac OS X : Sure, you were happy when the first Mac OS X-compatible version of Word arrived (after all, it’s the one software program you can’t live without). But this is the version you’ve really been waiting for. In contrast to Word for Mac OS X-which gelled nicely with the new OS but didn’t offer much compelling additional functionality-Word 2004 offers a slew of usability improvements. To start taking advantage of them immediately, you need this task-based guide from popular Mac teacher Maria Langer! Using simple step-by-step instructions, loads of visual aids, and plenty of well-placed tips, Maria gets you up and running fast on the basics before moving on to cover more advanced techniques (formatting, inserting objects, creating outlines, and more). If you’re a veteran user, you can go directly to the new material (for example, learning how to record audio notes and link them to your Word docs). And if you’re a beginner, you’ll appreciate the thorough coverage of all the most common Word tasks. read more

Dellin –

–Wolfgang Treß read more

I wanted a visual guide of where to find things and how to do them; because obviously the Mac operating system is organized differently from what I had been using. The book, with nice pictures and step by step instructions, succeeds in providing the bare essentials for a someone new to computer; but is woefully incomplete. There are simply many subjects not touched on (there’s for instance, no mention of the fact that Macs are not designed to Defrag, and a few that could have been omitted (does someone starting out really want to tackle Terminal(from what I can discern the Mac equivalent of a DOS window), when first starting out? The CD provided with the book provides little more than some files to push around. I had a ton of those from my previous computer.
I found that, perhaps because Snow Leopard is so stable and logical, I could stumble around the system, opening menus and windows and teaching myself how to do virtually everything I can do on a PC. If one is not intimidated by a new machine, and has some prior experience on computers, there surely are better books out there.
Mac OS X Snow Leopard Digital Classroom : A complete training package for Apple’s new operating system

Commandos is a successful stealth-oriented real-time tactics game series, available for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. The game is set in the Second World War and follows the escapades of a fictional British Commando section. It leans heavily (though not always accurately) on historical events during WWII to carry the plot. The series was developed by the Spanish company Pyro Studios and published by Eidos Interactive. read more

In particular, if you have been a UNIX user since a long time, just using the basic commands (ls, cd etc – because at the university/college it was the OS by default and basically you had no choice ) and now want/need to go a little bit further down the road, this is the book to start with. Title could have been “Everything you ever wanted to know about UNIX … ” because it also tells about the little stories behind the commands – origin of names, why, who, when etc. A good book, for sure.
Unix for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: Visual QuickPro Guide (2nd Edition) : As Unix spreads its tentacles across users’ desktops, more and more Mac users are starting to pop the hood and learn about the operating system that’s at the root of it all. And there’s no better way to conquer that fear than by consulting this Visual QuickPro Guide. Matisse Enzer, who wrote the first edition of this book, Unix for Mac OS X: Visual QuickPro Guide has completely updated this guide to reflect all that’s new in Tiger’s version of Unix. Readers will learn everything they need to know to make sense of the commands and technical jargon surrounding Unix. In the process they’ll find out about useful utilities, editing and printing files, security, and more–all through simple, step-by-step instructions that break the learning process into manageable chunks. Throughout, users will find plenty of the tips and visual references that have become the hallmark of Peachpit’s popular Visual QuickPro Guides. Unix for Mac OS X 10.4: Visual QuickPro Guide is perfect for any Mac user interested in learning about the Unix operating system. read more

It’s only 288 pages so unless there are 4 or 5 commands on each page (which there aren’t) then it’s not going to add up to 1000. There are probably more like 100 commands that, with multiple usage examples, may equal close to 1000 EXAMPLES but there are definitely not 1000 DIFFERENT COMMANDS covered in this book or any of the other books in the * Toolbox series.

Outside of that, the book is a good introduction to the Mac OS X command line. I would give it 4 stars if the title wasn’t outright false advertising. A more accurate title would be “Introduction to the Mac OS X Command Line” which would better describe what this book really is.

Don’t buy if you expect to learn 1000 new and exotic Unix commands because this book does not cover them. Do buy if you are looking for a simple introduction to the Unix core of Mac OS X.
MAC OS X UNIX Toolbox: 1000+ Commands for the Mac OS X :
